Sturmont rose to escort me to the door. When it opened, his secretary took over. I turned around to say, ‘Thanks again for your time,’ but at the start of the turn heard the click and then saw the door close before I could open my mouth.

‘I trust that you had a good meeting.’

The declaration was delivered in such a tone as to present the only possible response as being in the affirmative. I obliged. She smiled, pressed the button for the elevator, allowed me a moment to notice her impeccable grooming, the absence of creases in her smart skirt and white blouse, and then said, as the doors opened, ‘Here it is. You can give your pass to the concierge when you go through security. Goodbye, Mr Kincaid.’

As I said, ‘Thank you’ and desperately tried to think of something else to add, the elevator doors closed.
