Evangeline

“Why aren't they back yet?” I pace the length of Grace and Warwick’s small bedroom for the thousandth time since the guys left and step out onto the landing of the large metal staircase that leads down to the warehouse floor.

Grace motions me back in and pats the side of the bed next to her on the side not occupied by a snoring Milo. “Like I’ve told you a hundred times, this is the worst part about this life. But if something were wrong, Preacher would've told us so we could be prepared.”

He’s already updated us on the fact that the women weren’t on board as expected. Whether they changed their plans, or I misunderstood what the shipment was, guilt has weighed on me at the danger I put them in, essentially for nothing.

Yes, the weapons won’t make it to the Albanians, and several members of Erjon’s crew were taken out, but it means there could also be another shipment of women out there somewhere with no one to rescue them.

I take a deep breath and lower myself onto the bed next to her. “I can't believe you're so calm.”

She rubs her large belly and chuckles. “I don't have any other choice if I want to keep this little guy in for the next couple weeks.”

It takes me a lot to force a smile. I can’t imagine being pregnant and going through what she does every time these guys go out there. No one has offered me much information, but between overhearing a few conversations and the things people have told me, I think it's safe to say I know what these guys are…

Pirates.

Not the swashbuckling, sword-wielding ones I used to read about in old romance novels. These are the kind who carry guns and kill people. They were only on my ship because they wanted the cargo. It wasn't a rescue mission. They weren't there to help us. It was just the position they ended up in when they didn't find what they expected on board.

And now, because of me, they've been pulled into this massive human trafficking ring, and I'm still smack dab at the center of it.

Grace rubs my back softly. “Really, try not to worry. These guys are good at what they do and know how to take care of themselves.”

“Shouldn't I be the one comforting you?”

She laughs and shakes her head. “I've been here long enough that I know what to expect. I'm definitely nervous; I'm just doing my best to not show it and trying to stay calm for the baby’s sake.”

Grace makes it seem so easy.

No amount of deep breathing and good thoughts will ease this tension coiling in my body.

Nothing will until Elijah steps safely through that door.

I shouldn’t care this much. I shouldn’t be worrying about a man I barely know, but the time we’ve spent together has bonded me to him in a way I can’t explain. I owe him my life, and I can’t stand the thought of anything bad happening to him.
