been an acquaintance of Edward’s for many year sand his father’s before that, although their divided loyalties at the beginning of the War had created a rift between them. Sir John, having secured most of
Derbyshire for Parliament during the early months of the War, was one of the leading lights of the
Parliamentary cause in the North Midlands. How ever, Jane experienced a quiver of fear; she was not unaware that he had proved extremely successful in keeping his native county virtually free of Royalists.
It was imperative that Simon recovered his health in order to find his way back to the King’s army.
“Yes, now would be a good time. It won’t be dark for hours yet. But what about Isabel?”
“At this moment I believe she is soaking in a hot tub—and Mother is resting.” It was too good an opportunity to miss. “Then let us ask Seth to accompany us up to Grindly Moor. The horses can be got ready whilst we change.
Accompanied by Seth, Jane and Anne rode up the valley to Grindly Moor. The stream which they followed, having hewn its way over the centuries into a deep gully, tumbled over its rocky bed. Its gentle flow was deceptive, giving no evidence now of the turbulent spirit with which it would become possessed after the winter months, when the sun would melt the deep drifting snows high up on the moor and unlock the frozen earth, creating a force of water that would go crashing and thundering down the valley advancing to the swollen waters of the River Derwent.
Old Hall Farm stood on the edge of the moor, a small isolated farm—a relatively new dwelling, built in grey stone with mullioned windows and a heavy stone-slated roof, a style of domestic building that was gradually becoming part of the personality of the Peak District.,
Carrying a bag containing salves and medicines—most of them of a herbal nature made by Lady Blanche in the still room at Deighton Hall the small party. rode into the farm yard, hurriedly dismounting and, their arrival anticipated, were met on the doorstep of the house by Mr. Jarvis, an elderly, hardworking sheep farmer who had lost both his wife and two sons in the space of five years.
His wife had died of a fever and his sons had been killed fightin, g for the King—one at Edgehill and the other at Marston Moor. He was an ardent supporter of the King, who never turned a fellow of the same conviction from his door not even should his own life be put in danger.
After confirming that Sir Simon and Captain Digby were sheltering inside his house, quickly Mr. Jarvis showed Jane and Anne inside, leaving Seth with the horses. The dim light filtering through the grimy windows to the untidy interior caused them both to blink and adjust heir eyes. Clearly it was the abode of a man who lived alone, for it was full of jumble and clutter, without the orderliness a woman brings to a home.
