Chapter 15

The Rigging

“OK,” said Nash. “Well, we’re going to have to call Detective Warshaw.”

“Not a chance,” said Tobias. “What we need to do is call someone on the blue page team.”

“This is a vital piece of information,” said Nash.

“Yes!” agreed Tobias cheerfully.

“It speaks to motive.”

“It really does!” agreed Tobias again.

“So we need to tell the Detective.”

“Hard nope,” said Tobias.

Nash opened his mouth and closed it again and then looked at Tish. “How am I winning and yet also losing?”

Tish chuckled. “You agree on facts but are drawing different conclusions about what they mean. And for the record, I also think we should tell the detective.”

“What?” gasped Tobias. “How can my own flesh and blood betray me like this?”

“Well, because sooner or later, we’re going to want her to arrest someone, and if we don’t bring her along, at least a little bit, she won’t believe us when we tell her who did it.”

“Exactly,” said Nash, looking happy about her support.

“Although, I’m not sure I’m advocating for telling her right this second,” said Tish. “We could wait.”

Tobias grinned, while Nash glared at her.

“Meanwhile, why the special effects crew?”

“I have a theory about what the pillows mean,” said Tobias. “And that voicemail only makes me more certain of it, but I want to talk to one of them that was supposed to be working on the tower to know for sure.”

“OK,” said Tish, taking out her phone and dashing off a few texts. While she was typing, Nash’s phone beeped, momentarily preventing further argument.

“I feel like I should be typing something,” said Tobias.

“Your thumbs aren’t up to it,” said Tish.

“She is a rookie,” said Nash.

“What?”

“Detective Warshaw. Just got promoted. She’s normally with SPD, but she’s covering for Spring while he’s recovering. So your theory that she was a rookie is correct.”

“Look at me, being right,” said Tish proudly.

“Never doubted it,” said Tobias. “But we’re still not telling her.”

“Yes,” said Nash.

“No,” said Tish.

“Tish!” exclaimed Nash.

“What? It’s going to be a lot more compelling for the detective if we can give her something besides a voicemail. And I don’t care if she is new. She’s been kind of a wench.”

“Well, yes, but now I’m aware of material evidence,” said Nash.

“And that’s why I didn’t want you to help investigate,” said Tish. “I know you don’t like being in moral quandaries. I’m trying to keep you quandary-free.”

“I’m dating you. You’re a walking quandary.”

“We’ve said quandary too many times,” said Tish. “Now it feels weird.”

“It was weird to start out with,” said Tobias. “Q words always are. Look, Nash, it’s not hiding material evidence. It’s delaying delivery. You can tell her when you go back to work. She said she didn’t want you on the case. Well, there you go. Just follow instructions and keep out of it.”

“Malicious compliance,” said Nash, appearing to think it over. “Yeah, I can do that, but you have to swear that you’re telling her.”

“Swear it,” said Tobias. And Tish nodded just as her phone beeped.

“OK,” she said, looking at the message.
