Other, less complicated incendiary devices were also used. Flame-tipped javelins and crossbow bolts are recorded, along with the medieval version of the grenade. Various forms of liquid fire could be poured into small glass or clay receptacles (see Illustration 3.5), which then could be thrown by hand from a city wall or hurled from siege machines.
