5 Evidence that the Earth is Round

5.1 Evidence from Sailing

For several centuries, sailors have observed that the Earth is round. Watch how the boat disappears differently in the following two diagrams. We will call these Figure 1 and Figure 2.

Figure 1 is illustrated in the following diagram. In Figure 1, Observer A, on the cliff, can see the top part of the ship. However, Observer B, on the beach, can’t see the ship at all.

Figure 2 is illustrated in the following diagram. In Figure 2, both Observers A and B see all of the ship. The ship appears smaller as it leaves, but the same proportion of the ship is always visible.
