It was never good to ride the hedge and journey into lands of the mind and spirit when you were unsettled or ill at ease. I know that people did meditation or guided visualisations to find calm and peace and that probably worked, but this was a different thing. Pathworking was an active situation where you needed your wits about you. Having complicated emotions clouding your judgement was dangerous. After all, there was a certain element involved of creating what you wished to see although the framework within which you were walking was definitely of an alternate reality.

Yeah. If you didn’t understand that, it’s fine; it’s kind of hard to put into words.

I could explain it all in fifty different ways and not really come close to it. The soul is a powerful thing, connected to all creation – and un-creation – in ways that we can’t fathom. You think you know yourself because you are yourself ... but you’re not.

Sorry.

And now it was late. It was fully dark now and there was a three-quarter waxing moon. Basically, all the signs were inauspicious and if circumstances were at all different, I would not have chosen to hedge ride at this time. Especially not on a full stomach.

She knew better than to interrupt my preparations but she let me know that she thought it was a foolish time to be doing this. She was annoyed by literally every decision I’d made recently, it seemed.

I knew she had my back, regardless. If she was too tired to wait up, she would have food and drink laid out on the table for me.

I was dressed warmly. All that skyclad stuff is great for blurry, artistic photographs in magazines but not terribly practical on a dark Welsh night. Over the top of my woolly jumper I did throw my cloak which was never used for anything except this. I loved cloaks and they were great for keeping me warm when I was sitting down. There’s something snuggly about a cloak. They are not so practical, unfortunately, for wearing while you’re doing the weekly grocery shopping, otherwise I would have wafted about in one all the way through winter.

I picked up my stang. This is a forked stick which can
