Tom Spencer happened upon the local TV news report on the rescue of a kidnapped West Elm man with mild interest. The report detailed the abduction of thirty-four-year-old Jeff Zinkas, who was brutally assaulted and abandoned to die in the wilderness. He was rescued after authorities received an anonymous tip, but police had very little to go on.
Like a light going on, Tom recalled his curious conversation with Vince and Nate the week before. The ominous comment about the dog dumper being âdumped himselfâ kept running through his mind. Could those shelter guys actually do something this drastic? Itâs one thing to talk about it, but itâs another to actually do it.
He had to know, so he contacted his cousin Phil, a police officer in Bryan. He wanted the name connected to the license number.
âSure, Tommy, but why?â Phil asked.
âSome jerk dumped a dog near us, and weâre thinking about reporting him.â
âYou should. Thatâs despicable. Letâs see,â he said, pulling up the database. âOkay, his name is Jeffery James Zinkas.â
âZinkas?â Tom blurted out. âOh my gosh. Itâs him!â
âItâs who?â asked Phil.
âThe kidnapped guy on the news. The police want help catching his attackers. Itâs possible I know who did it!â
âSeriously? Youâve gotta report that.â
âIâm not sure I want to report it. If this is the same guy, heâs a monster.â
âYou mean the guy with the dog?â
âYes, and if so, he deserved what he got. He taped its mouth shut. If I hadnât accidentally been there, it wouldâve died a slow and cruel death. It was terrible. Sue and I kept it from the kids, and weâre still upset.â
âI understand your conflict, but if you know somethingââ
âIâm not sure. It could be a coincidence.â
âThatâs a mighty big coincidence!â
âHonestly, I donât want to.â
Phil sighed. âThis sucks, Tom, but Iâm obligated to report this myself if you donât. Technically I could be considered an accessory if I withhold information involving a violent felony.â
âPhil, just let me handle this. It could cause good people all kinds of legal trouble over nothing.â
After a long pause, Phil responded, âAlright, but even if you think itâs nothing, let the law figure it out.â
