Tom Spencer happened upon the local TV news report on the rescue of a kidnapped West Elm man with mild interest. The report detailed the abduction of thirty-four-year-old Jeff Zinkas, who was brutally assaulted and abandoned to die in the wilderness. He was rescued after authorities received an anonymous tip, but police had very little to go on.

Like a light going on, Tom recalled his curious conversation with Vince and Nate the week before. The ominous comment about the dog dumper being “dumped himself” kept running through his mind. Could those shelter guys actually do something this drastic? It’s one thing to talk about it, but it’s another to actually do it.

He had to know, so he contacted his cousin Phil, a police officer in Bryan. He wanted the name connected to the license number.

“Sure, Tommy, but why?” Phil asked.

“Some jerk dumped a dog near us, and we’re thinking about reporting him.”

“You should. That’s despicable. Let’s see,” he said, pulling up the database. “Okay, his name is Jeffery James Zinkas.”

“Zinkas?” Tom blurted out. “Oh my gosh. It’s him!”

“It’s who?” asked Phil.

“The kidnapped guy on the news. The police want help catching his attackers. It’s possible I know who did it!”

“Seriously? You’ve gotta report that.”

“I’m not sure I want to report it. If this is the same guy, he’s a monster.”

“You mean the guy with the dog?”

“Yes, and if so, he deserved what he got. He taped its mouth shut. If I hadn’t accidentally been there, it would’ve died a slow and cruel death. It was terrible. Sue and I kept it from the kids, and we’re still upset.”

“I understand your conflict, but if you know something—”

“I’m not sure. It could be a coincidence.”

“That’s a mighty big coincidence!”

“Honestly, I don’t want to.”

Phil sighed. “This sucks, Tom, but I’m obligated to report this myself if you don’t. Technically I could be considered an accessory if I withhold information involving a violent felony.”

“Phil, just let me handle this. It could cause good people all kinds of legal trouble over nothing.”

After a long pause, Phil responded, “Alright, but even if you think it’s nothing, let the law figure it out.”
