Chapter Eleven
IâM NOT QUITE SURE how I got home last night, but when I woke I was still in the clothes that I had worn the day before. I was in a tangle of sheets, and Iâd rolled off my foam mattress. This was ridiculous. I would need to borrow a sleeping bag from Court or someone else in my circle. Emily was not in her bed. I patted my pockets and then pulled at my sheets in an effort to find my phone. It was nowhere to be found, so I pulled myself up and opened the bedroom door.
The blast of light blinded me, shooting pain in the front of my head. It felt like someone was doing acupuncture to my brain. Before I could fully regain my senses, Sophie handed me my phone. âYou ready to go?â
I covered my eyes. âGo where?â
âYou promised you gonna take me out driving. Today. Saturday.â
I needed coffee. I stumbled to the kitchen and was frustrated to see that none had been made. The Santiago women were useless.
Sophie followed me into the kitchen like she was a hungry dog. I was starting to remember that Iâd made some promise to her about driving. Damn me. âLet me just get some coffee in me, okay?â
Even the grinding of my coffee beans was insufferable. This morning wasnât a Mr. Coffee type of day. I took out my French press and emptied the grinder into the glass carafe. When the water in the kettle was close to boiling, I carefully poured it over the grinds, pushed down on the top, and waited for my magic brew to be completed. Sophie knew me well enough to remain quiet until I poured my first cup. I usually drank my coffee black, but today I fortified it with a couple of teaspoons of sugar and some dried milk.
âYou were drunk last night,â Sophie finally declared, eyeing me from across the kitchen table.
I was afraid to hear what I had done, but I had to ask. âWhat happened?â
âD-man drove you home in the Ford. You were babbling a lot about that lawyer, Washburne. And also that lady we found in Waimea Bay.â
Oh my God. I couldnât believe Iâd voiced my obsessions out loud. Then I remembered my text exchange with Adam Harjo. Did I imagine that?
âWho heard me?â
âBasically everyone in the house. Mom even came out of her room and sat on the porch with D-man for a while. I think sheâs pretty sad.â
âShe is? About me?â
âNo, not about you.â I had never spoken to Mom about her sadness, but I knew that with her MS, she didnât want to squander any active years that she had left. She had discussed taking the whole brood to her hometown in Orange County. Dani had been talking nonstop about going to Disneyland. But that was all in the before times.
âI know she was happy that you said you were going to teach me how to drive.â
I gave her a side eye. She was a master manipulator.
