Chapter Seventeen

It’s New Year’s Eve. How has it only been a week since I met Alex? We haven’t spent a day apart from each other yet. He even came with me to my apartment today when I said I had to actually go home. He doesn’t like that I’m not officially moved in with him. He asks me every day, but I’m not giving up my apartment just yet.

As much as I want to take that leap, make the jump into the unknown, I can’t. I need to be smart about this relationship. It’s new. It can’t be healthy to move in with each other after just one week, can it?

We’ve had the best couple of days in the Hunter Valley. After spending Boxing Day at the McKinley Ranch with the rest of my family, Alex whisked me off to a resort. We spent two days wine tasting, eating cheese, and having sex on every available surface we could find. It was bliss.

We returned to the city yesterday. I spent most of the day catching up on sleep while Alex worked. I’m not entirely sure how I feel about his type of work just yet. Alex has questioned why I’m not running for the hills, and why I’m not shocked or disgusted by what he does. I haven’t told him it’s probably because—whatever it is he does—I’m certain my cousins on my mum’s side have done one hundred times worse.

Hope and I don’t exactly advertise that we’re cousins of the mafia. It’s bad enough growing up with Ash always in our business. I’m thankful that my other cousins live in New York. If they were here, there is no way they would approve of Alex. And as much manpower as Alex has surrounding him, it won’t ever be enough to hold off those crazy bastards.

I’m digging through my wardrobe, trying to find an outfit for tonight. Pulling out a hot little sparkly black dress, I hold it up against myself in front of the mirror.

“No,” Alex says. For a minute, I think he’s talking to himself. He’s sitting on my bed, typing away on his phone. I don’t think he’s even looked up at me. But when I go to put the dress in my overnight bag, he drops his phone and pulls the dress back out, repeating the singular word. “No.”

“You can say no as much as you like, but that doesn’t change the fact that I’m wearing this tonight.” I snatch the dress from him and return it to the bag.

“Where are you planning on going tonight?” he asks, his eyebrows drawn down.

“It’s New Year’s Eve, Alex.” I answer like that’s all the explanation I need to give.

“I’m aware, so again, where is it you’re planning on going?”

“The Merge. Hope and I always go there for New Year’s Eve.” I shrug.

“And when were you going to tell me about these plans?”

He’s starting to piss me off with his line of questioning. Who does he think he is? I’m not ever going to ask his permission to go anywhere.
