Chapter Twelve

THE GLADE HAD been bathed in moonlight, the spring air crisp and clear. Elves typically didn’t hold their bonding ceremonies at night, but for werewolves, the full moon meant everything to them. It was easy enough for Thalanil to make that compromise, just as it was for Orion to agree to this sacred spot of the elves.

Orion stood off at the edge of the clearing, taking it all in. The lights hanging in the trees looked like the same magical balls from inside the city. The stump of a fallen tree had been carved into an altar. An archway stood over it, draped in flowers and vines.

The seating was nothing more than simple wooden benches. Thalanil sat on one at the front, speaking with his cousin, Fôlwin. She had become a good friend to Orion, so he wasn’t surprised when Fôlwin left Thalanil sitting with his parents to come speak with him.

“Everything’s ready,” she said. “We can start whenever the pack arrives.”

Orion glanced into the forest and smiled as he turned back to Fôlwin. “Give me a minute.”

Disappearing into the shadows of the great redwood trees, Orion met his packmates. Not all of them had come—their current hunting grounds were distant—but those who mattered most were there.

His dearest friends and hunting partners, Kai and Dirk, made the transition into their human form in order to throw themselves into his arms. They had the wherewithal to know fur on his dress clothes wasn’t the best of ideas.

“You look great,” Kai said. Rather than her usual furs, she wore a fitted red dress—highlighting her equally bright-red hair. The sheer fabric flowed all the way to the ground, straps sitting off her shoulders. She twirled in place, a large grin on her face. “Like it?”

“You’re beautiful.” Orion pressed a kiss to her forehead.

Dirk flipped his black hair from his face. “Guess you look alright,” he drawled. Kai punched him in the shoulder.

“I see you dressed up.”

Dirk scoffed. “They’re clean. That’s all you get.” It wasn’t as though he looked bad—Dirk had always cut a handsome figure. He had pants that were free of holes at least, and his sleeveless denim vest was indeed cleaned of dirt and blood. Maybe their standards were just different from most people’s.

Marric approached in wolf form—gray fur with striking blue-gray eyes. “Alpha,” Orion greeted, tipping his head to flash his throat briefly. He greeted Marric’s mate, Jacqueline, next, along with their eldest son, Kear. The other pups, as well as the pack beta, Haar, were not present, however. “Haar’s not coming?”

“Someone needs to watch the pack,” Kai said.

“I suppose you’re right.”

It wasn’t as though the gruff beta and he were close. Haar was a tough one to get along with. Still, it would have been nice to have everyone there.

A black wolf approached, a white star over her left eye. She huffed at him, not the least bit impressed. “Thank you for coming, Luna,” Orion pacified. “I’m glad you’re here.” She appeared satisfied, sitting back on her haunches.
