CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

Lewis had arrived back in town early the next morning and called to see if he could come over. “Of course,” I told him. I wanted to know how Vanesa was doing and if she was safe.

I put on a pot of coffee and waited for Lewis to arrive. I went through a wave of emotions simply thinking about Vanesa. I really wanted to see her again—just to know she was safe, of course.

When Lewis let himself in, I was pouring myself a cup of coffee. “Would you like some?”

“No, you know I don’t like that stuff—gets me all hyper. And you and I both know I don’t need to be any more of myself than I already am.”

Laughing, I said, “You’re right.”

“Alright, Angelo, I know you want to know about Vanesa, so I’ll run through that real quick, but I have an idea to help get Craig out of holding and off the suspect list entirely.”

He ran through the details of Vanesa and where she was. He said the cabin she was in was secluded, and his men had every vantage point covered. He told me she’d picked a great location to hide away because it was really remote. He said she looked healthy but tired. Lewis also said she was always on the phone, but it appeared that she had multiple burner phones, so she was covering her tracks well.

“Thanks, Lewis. It sounds like you have her protected well, and she seems to be doing a good job of protecting herself as well.”

I quickly went over what I had found out from Vanesa. “First off, Vanesa informed me that Grant and Jack were the other two people of interest. According to police and receipts, their alibis were good for the time of the murder.”

“What receipts? What are you talking about, Angelo?”

“Hold on, Lewis, I’m getting there. Grant and Jack said that they were together at a bar called Attaboy and produced the receipts showing they left at 3 a.m. the night of the murder. Of course, we know that they, in fact, were at Dogon Tech, so while you were gone, I paid a visit to Attaboy. I met Brandy, the bartender, who’s been at the bar since it opened. She knows Grant well. She says that he hasn’t set foot in there since his company announced they were going public. All the technology in Attaboy is from Dogon Tech. Somehow, they faked the receipts and lied to the police.” And then I asked him, “So, what’s your plan, Lewis?”

“OK, I hadn't expected that, but it doesn't surprise me that you caught Grant in a lie again. But as for the plan, I was thinking that the only person Grant will admit some truths to is Craig. So, what if Craig were to call him and confront him about not protecting him and saying that he was at work? Those phone calls are recorded and available as a matter of public record. If we can get Mr.
