Political and Economic Environment

Since Latin American market strategies must be long term to be effective, it doesn’t make much sense to invest money and time in a country that is politically unstable or has a shaky economic future. It’s prudent to make sure that the market will not only be accessible over a reasonably long period but that it will be growing. Although certainty is a rare commodity in any Latin American country, by putting together as many specific facts and sound opinions as possible about a country’s future potential, you should be able to reduce the risk of unrealistic growth projections.

Aside from international trade periodicals and U.S. government agencies focused on trade and foreign direct investment, some of which provide excellent coverage of Latin America, the most reliable and current information about political and economic conditions will come from the host-country offices of the American Chamber of Commerce, multinational banks, multinational accounting and consulting firms, and in-country subsidiaries or divisions of other American companies.
