Chapter 10

Sabrina sat in her room at the hotel and waited for Tom. He said he’d be back so they could compare notes. She paced the room and stopped to look out the window at the saloon. Finally, she saw him leave and walk toward the hotel.

She admired him. He walked with confidence. In fact, if she would have written a list of what she wanted in a man, Tom would have fit most of that list. I can’t go down that trail. She turned away from the window and turned her attention to the folder.

“The case is why we are here and why we are married.” She pushed thoughts, dreams really, from her mind. Women like her weren’t accorded the right to dream. She’d learned that at a young age. Along with everything else decent, her dreams had been taken, too.

The door opened, and Tom came in. “Did you find out a lot?”

“Some. How about you?”

He nodded. “You first.” He grinned. “As part of your training, let me hear you assess the situation from your side.”

She pointed to the chair. “You sit, I’ll have to pace as I think and tell you. Do you want to take notes?”

“I’m a good listener.” He sat and watched her.

She started walking around the small room. “For starters, I do not like Reverend Hezekiah, but the other women did. All six of them. That’s not very many people to put a saloon owner in a panic.”

“Why don’t you like him?” Tom sat up and leaned toward her.

“Several things I can put my finger on and some I can’t. Hezekiah is a charmer. I usually don’t like men who come as everyone’s best friend, or in this case, their redeemer. He’s big as a mountain. So just his size is intimidating. He’s a smooth talker, and that goes along as a black mark with his charming ways.”

Tom nodded. “Good. I like your evaluation of him. Go on.”

“I don’t think he trusts me. He singled me out. It might be because I am new to town. Yet, one of the ladies told me she just came in on a train from Chicago. It could be they know each other from there, but I was the one he singled out. I didn’t tell him anything. But I will have to be careful.”

Tom stood. “I don’t want you in any danger.”

“I’m your partner.”

“You’re my wife.”

She wanted to make a quick statement to put him off, but the look on his face took her by surprise. He meant it. He was a man saying he’d protect the woman he married. No strings or promise to annul the marriage when the case was closed. He meant every word.

Sabrina was at a loss as what to say. Somewhere deep inside her, she longed for him to be speaking the truth. But she knew better. Sooner or later, he would know what she’d been, and he’d annul their marriage before it even got a chance.

A chance? The words startled her, and she turned from him.
