Chapter 10
Sabrina sat in her room at the hotel and waited for Tom. He said heâd be back so they could compare notes. She paced the room and stopped to look out the window at the saloon. Finally, she saw him leave and walk toward the hotel.
She admired him. He walked with confidence. In fact, if she would have written a list of what she wanted in a man, Tom would have fit most of that list. I canât go down that trail. She turned away from the window and turned her attention to the folder.
âThe case is why we are here and why we are married.â She pushed thoughts, dreams really, from her mind. Women like her werenât accorded the right to dream. Sheâd learned that at a young age. Along with everything else decent, her dreams had been taken, too.
The door opened, and Tom came in. âDid you find out a lot?â
âSome. How about you?â
He nodded. âYou first.â He grinned. âAs part of your training, let me hear you assess the situation from your side.â
She pointed to the chair. âYou sit, Iâll have to pace as I think and tell you. Do you want to take notes?â
âIâm a good listener.â He sat and watched her.
She started walking around the small room. âFor starters, I do not like Reverend Hezekiah, but the other women did. All six of them. Thatâs not very many people to put a saloon owner in a panic.â
âWhy donât you like him?â Tom sat up and leaned toward her.
âSeveral things I can put my finger on and some I canât. Hezekiah is a charmer. I usually donât like men who come as everyoneâs best friend, or in this case, their redeemer. Heâs big as a mountain. So just his size is intimidating. Heâs a smooth talker, and that goes along as a black mark with his charming ways.â
Tom nodded. âGood. I like your evaluation of him. Go on.â
âI donât think he trusts me. He singled me out. It might be because I am new to town. Yet, one of the ladies told me she just came in on a train from Chicago. It could be they know each other from there, but I was the one he singled out. I didnât tell him anything. But I will have to be careful.â
Tom stood. âI donât want you in any danger.â
âIâm your partner.â
âYouâre my wife.â
She wanted to make a quick statement to put him off, but the look on his face took her by surprise. He meant it. He was a man saying heâd protect the woman he married. No strings or promise to annul the marriage when the case was closed. He meant every word.
Sabrina was at a loss as what to say. Somewhere deep inside her, she longed for him to be speaking the truth. But she knew better. Sooner or later, he would know what sheâd been, and heâd annul their marriage before it even got a chance.
A chance? The words startled her, and she turned from him.
