Chapter Seven
Matthiasâs gaze dropped down to the open book of John Donneâs poetry. Smoothing his dark fingers over its white surface, the black lines leapt up at him. The poem, The Sunneâs Rising, spoke of the poetâs irritation with the Sun as it beamed its bright light and awakened him and his lover.
Yet, the line which drew his eye and made his stomach knot was one of his favorites:
âLove, all alike, no season knows nor clime,
Nor hours, days, months, which are the rags of time.â
He sat back in the chair. Maybe what he sensed wasnât LaPierreâs desire for Brielle. Maybe heâd recognized that the man had fallen in love with his wife.
Matthias winced. Desire he could forgive as Brielle was a beautiful woman.
But love?
Could he blame the man if he had? Matthias had fallen in love with her the same way. The difference was that Brielle was his wife.
It was a hollow comfort.
âMatthias.â
He jerked at the sound of Brielleâs voice coming from above. He stood, seeing the pointed look in her eyes telling him she needed to speak with him that instant.
Would she ever realize that she loved him? Was he destined to live without her? Or worse, have her give her love to a man like LaPierre?
Shaking the melancholy thoughts from his mind, he asked. âDid you enjoy your tea with Lady Dallmann?â
âI did. She suggested we go for walk in the garden maze. Once you exit, it leads directly to the conservatory.â
âSounds like a fine thing to do on a day such as this.â He extended his arm. âShall we?â
Several minutes later they were strolling down a long narrow walkway hedged by manicured rosebushes. It led to the massive garden labyrinth which already had others traveling its length. In the far distance, the round clear dome of the conservatory glinted in the sunlight.
Certain they were out of earshot, but preferring to err on the side of caution, Matthias slowed their already languid steps even more. âWhat did you learn from our client?â he whispered.
Brielle also whispered back. âShe gave me a list of people. The problem is that she is not certain if they are true suspects or not.â
âExplain.â
He listened intently as they strolled along. The sunshine heated his head and a few beads of sweat lined his forehead but he didnât let it disturb him.
When Brielle paused for a long moment, he prompted her. âWhat is the name of the last person?â
âMonsieur LaPierre.â
Matthias glanced sharply into her face. âIs that so?â
She nodded. An uncomfortable silence settled between them. Matthias had to quash that spurt of satisfaction when he heard that LaPierre was among the list. It wouldnât do to let his emotions get involved, no matter how he felt about the man.
âAdditionally, we donât have the luxury of time,â Brielle said, breaking up the strained air.
âWhat do you mean?â
âWe have three days to figure out if Mr. Stanfield was murdered by any of them. After the third day, Monsieur LaPierre and Mr. and Mrs. St. Paul will be leaving.
