Adding Niacin

Any starter that’s not formulated for ducklings must be fortified to prevent niacin deficiency, which results in leg deformities and lameness. Duck starter ration contains sufficient niacin, but a starter ration not intended for ducklings may not. To prevent deficiency, supplement any nonduck starter ration with food-grade brewer’s yeast at the rate of 31⁄2 cups per 10 pounds of starter. (Livestock-grade brewer’s yeast, from farm stores, is cheaper, but you’ll need to use three times more of it.)

An alternative source of niacin is BVS (Best Veterinary Solutions) Poult Start, a vitamin and mineral pack formulated for baby turkeys, available from Metzer Farms, among others. Add it to the ducklings’ water at the rate of 1⁄2 teaspoon per 3 gallons of water.

Niacin deficiency affects ducks up to about 10 weeks of age, peaking at about 3 weeks. By the time ducks are mature enough to lay, they no longer need niacin supplementation.
