The next day we learned from the news that a man on the Santa Monica freeway, apparently running away from the police, had been run over by a heavy-duty truck. The truck driver tried to avoid him by steering sharply into the fast lane and collided with a car. The Medical Examiner was unable to identify the body because it had been reduced to mincemeat and subsequently burned to ashes in the fire that developed in the collision. According to a local resident, the news reported, the man had trespassed into his property, probably to burglarize the house, and killed the dog.

Another piece of news reported that the previous day’s downtown bombing had been claimed by the Weather Underground, and that all members involved in the action remained at large.
