CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

Dawn chased Artorian all the way to floor five-hundred and fifty-five as a cartoonish cat and mouse that cared nothing for physics. The mouse was always just barely one squeak ahead, but it was a whisker’s difference at the best of times. The observers in the Tower howled with laughter, and the static nodes observed with vast amusement.

Once they arrived at floor five-hundred and fifty-five, the nodes of Sun, Radiance, Resplendence, Nebula, Void, and Life welcomed them by waving the black and white checkered flags of a sportscar race. Confetti and sparklers went off when Artorian’s nose crashed through the finish line, with Dawn’s fang-filled mouth not particularly far behind the rest of his scrambling form. “Not the nose!”

Dawn knew no mercy. “Nose!”

“No!” Artorian dove behind the brazier holding the Life node, since that particular node’s container was large and provided much physical cover. The node didn’t like that, choosing to take that moment to alter their container to that of an old Casa Marseille light post.

The Life node happily became the light of this lively adventure, and observed as the Love cultivator got appropriately bit in the behind. Love is bite, and bite is love. Such is life, and Life approved.

The screams were part of life too, but the node chose not to focus on that as one of the visiting cultivators kept mauling the other one. Like a bear that needed to hear an apology, but also wasn’t at all going to explain that one was needed. Rather than any kind of forgiveness being applied, Dawn stopped her attacks not because she had her fill of yelps, but because of what was in the room.

She stood and turned, fascinated as her boy took a moment to crawl behind Resplendent cover to rub all the sensations of the bitemarks away. Turning up the Mage-frame sensitivity had downsides when one’s significant other had biting as a love language. Them teeth were sharp, too. For now, he was safe! Beautifully safe! “Life, I am gonna remember that light pole maneuver of yours!”

Mortis chuckled, and turned to the node with a schmoozing, borderline lecherous grin. “You should be thankful, Life chose the extra girthy pole.”

Mortis leaned to the Life node in a way that made the Love mage squint, the Goblin’s patient words flirtatious. “Are you trying to tell me something with that choice of thickness, Lify? Or are you happy to see me, Wify?”

Artorian groaned and dropped his head. “I would tell you two to get a room, but as I want to encourage the flirting, you’ve put me in a bind here. At least wait until I’m out of earshot?”

Mortis leaned against Life’s pole with just that little bit too much of the sensual touch. “What? Is the Love Ascended uncomfortable with such brazen displays of affection?”

Artorian could have spat fire out of his mouth. “The way you’re doing it? Yes! I know you’re acting like that to set my skin on fire and it’s working, mister! Be wholesome
