“They’re going to kill my mother.”

Inspector Kellerman stared at me for a moment and then simply said, “And?”

“What do you mean ‘and’?” I asked. “Someone is going to try to kill her. Isn’t that a matter for the police?”

“Based on what you’ve told me, Will, there isn’t really anything I can do. Even if I wanted to, which I don’t.”

The two of us sat silently in the diner on Church Street where I had asked John to meet me.

“Where’s your head at Will? One minute you’re ranting and raving about how people don’t understand how dangerous your mother is, and the next you’re trying to stop the Mossad from putting a hit on her. I know there’s no love lost between you two, so what’s the deal?”

I stared at my hamburger for a moment and thought about it. I didn’t know. Why in the hell was I trying to save her after all she’d done?

“Instinct.” I thought that over and nodded. “I guess that’s what it all comes down to. Love her or hate her, my instinct is to protect her.”

“That makes sense. I can live with that. The problem is that until somebody issues a direct threat or moves against her, we can’t do anything for your mother, even if we wanted to.”

“Which you don’t,” I interjected.

Kellerman shrugged and nodded his affirmation.

“Your mom doesn’t have a very big fan club. Somebody could walk up to her on Market Street in the middle of lunch hour and shoot her down and you couldn’t find a person to testify they’d seen anything.”

That was true. I didn’t even know how she was going to try to live any kind of life. Everyone knew who she was, what she had done. It wasn’t as if she had been cleared of all charges. My mother had been released from prison on a technicality.

“The thing about this whole situation, Will, is that the Mossad doesn’t need to put a hit out on your mom. Assuming a family member of someone killed in the bombing doesn’t come looking for revenge, which is a good possibility, natural causes will get her soon enough.

I looked up at him.

“Her hate, Will. It’ll take her out as sure as any bullet.” Kellerman dropped a five on the table and stood up. “Go home, Will. Pretend your mom is still in jail. Take care of Isabelle. Do what Anna Stevens said and just live your life.”

“What about Irving?”

“Dyer?”

“I told you, about my grandfather.”

Kellerman looked out the window.

“I’ll roust the old man, see what shakes loose.”
