Hammarskjöld was not only trying to prevent the secession of the richest region of the Congo, which was one of the richest regions in the world, but by trying to give sovereignty to West New Guinea—unbeknownst to him and unbeknownst to Kennedy and Sukarno—he was attempting to grant sovereignty to an area that held a hidden gold mine, a gold mine that proved to be twice that of Witwatersrand in South Africa, then the world’s richest gold mine. The gold mine had been discovered in 1936 by three Dutchmen, one of whom worked for the Netherlands New Guinea Petroleum Company (NNGPM). Despite the name, two US Rockefeller oil companies held the majority share in the company. The existence of the gold was a tightly kept secret, and it was not mined for many decades due to the difficulty of accessing the location. One person who was aware of the gold was Allen Dulles, the former head of the CIA whom Kennedy had forced to resign and who had worked as a lawyer for the Rockefellers.⁴⁴⁵ Kennedy and Hammarskjöld understood the potential consequences of their opposition to the Katanga secession in the Congo because of the resources there; however, neither could have known the landmine they were walking on when they supported the sovereignty of West New Guinea.
