Chapter Ten

The collective gasp that rings through Cup of Jo is almost deafening.

“You can’t be serious,” Jamar says. “Without you, murderers would be running free in this town.”

“He’s right, Jo,” Mrs. Marlow says. “You can’t leave us in the hands of Quentin Perry. We might as well pack up and move.”

Mo and Wes come rushing into Cup of Jo. The second she spots me, Mo runs over and throws her arms around me. “I’m going to kill him. For real this time. I have had it with that man.”

“Calm down, Mo. I’m fine. Quentin took care of it.”

“He’s crossed the line, and it has to end.”

“I agree, which is why I’m taking myself off this case and all future cases.”

Mo’s eyes widen. “Who do you think you’re kidding?”

“No one. I’m serious. I’m done with all of it.” I walk to the counter and start scrubbing it even though it’s already clean.

Mo follows me with Cam and Wes on her heels. “Jo Coffee doesn’t walk away from anything without a fight.”

“I did fight, and I lost. I’m tired of losing things because of Quentin.”

The door opens, and Quentin walks in. Speak of the devil. The mob of people immediately surround him.

“Whoa. Back off. All of you!” he yells.

“Guys!” With one word from me, they all take two steps back. “I appreciate your support, but I’ve got this. Sit down. Have some coffee.”

They listen, but every eye remains trained on Quentin as he approaches me.

He hands me a slip with the fine on it. “I have to personally serve you with this.”

I take it and then immediately give it right back. “There. You did. We’re done.”

He pockets it. “I’ll pay it as soon as I leave here, and everything will be fine. You can’t be caught anywhere near the case again or the chief will have you arrested, but—”

“That won’t be an issue because I’m not working the case anymore.”

“What?” He’s supposed to pretend to not want my help, but his surprise totally blows that cover.

“I mean it. I’m done. For good. You’re going to have to solve this without me.”

“Jo…”

I raise my head. “Robin, could you cover the register, please? I’m not feeling well. I’m going home for the day.”

“Of course,” she says.

Cam wraps his arm around me. “I’ll go with you.”

Quentin is still staring at me as we walk out.
