INTERIOR OF WEDGE ONE, DCSPER, E RING, SECOND FLOOR, PENTAGON—0943 HOURS

In a demolished office of the DCSPER on the second floor, Major Stephen V. Long, the former army ranger who had survived Grenada and the Persian Gulf War, had been knocked to the floor by the blast but was able to recover his senses quickly. His experience and training resulted in an almost instantaneous reaction to the danger. He brushed himself off and took one last look at the sky outside. His family, his future, and safety were only a few feet away, but instead of rushing outside, he turned around and headed back into the abyss to look for survivors. Like the other soldiers, he would rather die than leave a comrade behind. It was a creed that had been burned into his consciousness until it became a reflex action, and today it would cost him his life.
