The bawdy humor evident throughout The Golden Girls was unleashed even in its second episode, â Ladies of the Evening,â played by Rue McClanahan (left), Betty White (center), and Bea Arthur.
AN EARLY FROST
In 1985, the made-for-TV movie An Early Frost aired on NBC. The film starred Aidan Quinn as Michael Pierson, a successful gay lawyer who becomes infected with HIV. Along the way his family must come to grips with his illness and the social stigma attached to it. Though the network had difficulty finding sponsors for the film, An Early Frost won a number of awards, including a Golden Globe, an Emmy, and a Peabody. And it paved the way for future films to address the issue.
