Chapter Twenty

Grandma called me just after I got back to my office and dread settled into my stomach. She rarely called me and I wondered what horrors she had in store for me this time. “Hi, Grandma,” I said cautiously when I answered the call. Jess and the terrible trio zoomed over to press their ears up against the phone. “Is something wrong?” I asked.

“You’ll be having dinner with a nice young warlock this evening,” she announced without preamble.

“You set me up with another guy after that last fiasco?” I asked and it came out sounding whiney. She had a knack for making me feel like a teenager again.

“Don’t be sassy,” she snapped, which made the phantoms snicker. “I asked your Aunt Isabel to do some research on the Ebling Coven. They aren’t fake like the Plum Coven. These ones are reputable.”

I’d heard of the Ebling Coven and knew there were several families spread around the US. I’d even used their name as a cover when I’d been questioned by a witch at the Pentlands’ pre-Halloween ball a few months ago. “What if I don’t want to have dinner with this guy?” I asked sulkily.

“You’re going!” Grandma ordered. “Ewan will be picking you up at the mansion at seven.” She hung up before I could attempt to weasel my way out of it.

“Great,” I muttered sourly and tossed my phone onto my desk. I sat down and sank my hands into my hair. “This is just what I need right now,” I complained.

“Ten bucks says Diva hexes this guy during their date,” Maryanne predicted.

“I’ll take that bet,” Reginald replied eagerly. He was a hopeless romantic and believed in true love. Fran and Jess joined them and they whispered together about the possible outcomes of my unwanted date.

The only good thing about being forced to go out to dinner with another strange warlock was that I would miss out on the usual family drama. I stayed at work a bit longer than usual to catch up on my paperwork. As I was locking up, I saw Haydn emerge from his bookstore. He paused as if he sensed he was being watched. His eyes went to me, somehow knowing I was the one staring at him even though the blinds hid me from his view. I turned away and used magic to flick the light switch off before exiting through the back door.

My mood was glum as I drove home. I fortified myself with coffee, then took a shower. After doing my hair and makeup, I tried to decide what to wear. “You’re not going to wear that, are you?” Jess asked when I took a dress out of my closet.

“What’s wrong with it?” I asked defensively. I’d chosen black to suit my mood.

“You look like you’re going to a funeral,” Fran pointed out. I knew I was going to have all four specters as witnesses if my date was somewhere here in town. They would be a distraction during dinner. I would no doubt end up looking like a crazy person who talked to thin air.
