WE WERE VERY MUCH on edge. Even though everyone was tired, I made sure that Sheydu had some guards posted to inform us of any activity coming out of the opening on the other side of the valley overnight.

Asha’s people were reported to still be around, and Sheydu said they were in contact with our team, but they didn’t come to the house, and I saw none of them.

Before going to bed, I made sure to shut all the windows. Thayu complained that it was stuffy in the room, but I was nervous that someone might try to climb through. Most of the members of our team were tired, and we had to guard both the aircraft and all sides of the house, which was very exposed.

In the past few days, our enemies, whoever they might be, had shown incredible creativity in getting through our defences, and although I trusted Sheydu’s security team, I had no illusions that their surveillance would be watertight. Even so, I was so tired that I slept very well, and for once woke up to an orderly morning.

We had breakfast in the large dining room, where everyone who was going to come with me to the Ezmi clan was getting ready.

I finished breakfast and went to get dressed.

What did one wear when delivering overbearing ultimatums to groups of largely innocent people? Because I was not yet inducted into the Domiri clan, I couldn’t wear any of their ceremonial outfits. I could also not wear of any of my official gamra clothing. Gamra blues would not go down well in the Outer Circle.

I eventually settled on a utilitarian dark body suit which gave a small hint that I might be involved with the army.

While I stood in front of the wardrobe, missing Eirani, who would always know which was the most appropriate outfit for any occasion, Thayu came in.

She laughed when she saw me in front of the mirror. “You’re becoming as much a fusspot as Eirani is.”

“It’s important what I look like.”

“Not in the Outer Circle, it isn’t.”

“So I could wear gamra blues?”

Her eyes widened.

Point made.

Thayu couldn’t care less about what she wore. Right now, she had to wear a dress, which she hated, and she had to stay here, which she hated, too. Although she did love playing with Ayshada and in
