At that moment, I felt like I could burst into tears.
My face mustâve shown all my emotions as I hurried down the hall to the restroom. I wanted to be by myself. I didnât even notice Isaiah as I walked past him.
âHEY, HEY, HEY!â Isaiah said, as he grabbed my arm. âWhatâs wrong?â Isaiah looked worried.
âUgh,â I responded. âItâs too much to go into.â
âEva, itâs me. You can tell me anything. Maybe I can help?â Isaiah offered.
âThanks, Isaiah.â I felt my face soften as I talked to him. âThose girls, Isaiah, they donât even care if Iâm left out. I donât know why I even try with them.â
Isaiah looked confused. âWhat girls are you talking about?â he asked.
âYOU KNOW... JASMINE, MAKAYLA, AND LEAH. I USED TO BE FRIENDS WITH THEM AND NOW I CANâT THINK OF ONE THING TO SAY TO THEM,â I explained. Isaiah smiled and said softly, âYouâre different from them, Eva, and thatâs okay.â
âI know, but shouldnât I at least be able to get along with everyone? I always thought if Iâm nice, I could be friends with anyone.â
Isaiah responded, âYouâre friendly with everyone because youâre nice. But you wonât click with everyone.â
âIâm not saying I should be best friends with them, but if I canât even get along with them, what does that say about me?â I said. I paused as Isaiah looked at me, waiting for me to go on. âDOESNâT THAT MEAN IâM WEIRD? TOO WEIRD FOR THEM TO EVEN WANT TO TALK TO ME?â I finally said.
âNo, it doesnât mean youâre weird, Eva. People are different and have different interests. Youâre nice to them, but youâre not gonna be friends with everyone. You canât expect that of yourself or anyone else! Maybe theyâre not your people.â Isaiah smiled, paused, and added, âIâm your people.â
