Chapter Ten

“So, what are you doing here?” Lyla maneuvered out of Nick’s arms and turned to face him as Alex left them alone giving them privacy.

“I told you...I’ve come here to meet you. I missed you so much.” Nick bent down to kiss her but Lyla stepped back.

With hands on her waist, Lyla looked down with a sigh. “Seriously Nick...you know I need time. This is only complicating things.”

Nick looked surprised. “But Minerva painted a much more positive picture than that...I thought you were ready.” Nick winced at the look on Lyla’s face. “Oh crap, I’m going to leave right away then...”

“No!” Her panic surprised Lyla. “Don’t go...I mean you’ve come so far just to meet me. You don’t have to leave.”

She cursed herself for making him stay though she didn’t want him to but she couldn’t think of any other way to save her from falling for Alex again. It was a close brush today.

“Are you sure, Lyla? I want to give us a chance and I don’t want to spoil it if my staying ruins it.”

Nick couldn’t understand his feelings for Lyla. On one hand, he wanted to be with her with all his passion. Yet on the other hand, he felt invisible when he was with her, as if he didn’t have any part in her vibrant life. Today, he could see that Lyla didn’t want him to stay but she still asked him to do so and he wondered if Alex had something to do with it. He looked at Lyla uncertainly.

“No. I just want you to stay and perhaps, by spending time together I’d be able to make up my mind,” Lyla answered truthfully.

Nick gave a relieved smile. Maybe his relationship with Lyla wasn’t a lost cause. Though he wasn’t sure how much longer he’d be able to continue pursuing her. The truth was this trip was his last attempt to change her mind. He hoped it wouldn’t be an utter failure.

It was way past midnight, but Alex couldn’t sleep. The fact that he’d been watching a movie only spoken in Chinese for the last couple of hours didn’t bother him. He couldn’t understand a word of the movie and he wouldn’t remember any of it. His thoughts were for the woman across the wall that, in all probability, might be sleeping with her fiancé.

Alex clenched his jaws at the thought. It shouldn’t bother him. How did he forget about her fiancé? Lyla has moved on and rightfully so. He should’ve moved on as well but he chose to wait for the forgiveness of this woman who clearly had no intention of doing so.

Their evening together had looked very promising to Alex. Over the past few days, he’d realized that Lyla took the shock of his part in Andrew’s death much harder than he thought. Her general mistrust in everyone, her denial of any pain and refusal for any help in anything were alarming changes in the woman he so cared for.

Yet, he hadn’t failed to notice the subtle deviations in her behavior towards him in the past few days.
