CHAPTER 12

Jaxon

Logan’s emerald eyes went wide. She blinked slowly and inhaled a deep breath. “I can’t breathe,” she whispered, panic flaring in her eyes.

Was she having another anxiety attack? I wasn’t expecting that.

“Uh, shit, okay.” I caressed her face and contemplated blowing on her face, but that seemed ridiculous and entirely the wrong thing to do.

She was having an anxiety attack because of everything I just said to her, so I had to distract her. Pressing my lips to hers, I hoped like hell it worked.

Her lips were softer than I remembered. Swiping my tongue along the seam of her plump bottom lip, I sought entrance, but she was frozen beneath my touch. I tenderly bit the soft flesh, and she gasped, lips parting.

I sucked her lip into my mouth, swallowing her moan, and felt her soften against me. I pulled back after a moment and opened my eyes. Her chest was rising and falling rapidly, but she was breathing. Her eyes were electric as they danced across my face. My gaze locked on her tongue when she licked her lips. Her hands were soft on my forearms, her vicious nails biting into my flesh.

“Did—did—" she whispered, her nose brushing against mine, “kiss—you—oh, my God.” Her sentence was incoherent but I nodded, pressing another kiss to her lips, and she sighed.

“Yeah, sweetheart, I kissed you, and I want to do it again.”

“No, no. I can’t think when you do that.” She closed her eyes and inhaled a shaky breath. “You just kissed me.”

I cracked a grin. “I think we already established that.”

“What happened to just being friends?!” she shrieked. I bit my tongue to keep from laughing.

“Changed my mind. Did you miss that part of the conversation? I want to see where this goes.” She shook her head, tears pooling in her eyes.

Why is she crying? What did I say?

“But—but you said you aren’t that guy, remember?” Her bottom lip trembled. I wanted it between my teeth again. I wanted to take her doubt away.

“I thought I wasn’t, but you make me question everythin’.”

“This wasn’t supposed to happen, Jax. We’re supposed to be friends.” Why is she pushing me away?

“Can you honestly tell me you don’t want more? That you don’t want me to kiss you? That you don’t want to get to know me?” She hesitated, those fucking eyes betraying her.

“Well, no… I can’t.”

“Then, what’s the problem, sweetheart? What are you scared of?” I caressed her face, my thumb brushing her cheek, and her eyes fluttered close.

“I don’t want to be alone again. I don’t want to be arm candy,” she whispered, and my heart splintered at her confession.

“I’m not him, Logan. I can’t promise everythin’ will work out between us, but I can promise to try. I can give you all of me, and I can promise that you will never be just arm candy to me.” She deflated against my touch and my words.

“Okay.”

“Okay, so you’ll be at my game tomorrow?” Her eyes flew open, wide with panic.
