Chapter Sixteen
Beep. Beep. Beep. This noise relieved me before, but now itâs a reminder of where I am and who is on the other end of that machine. I guess the gods didnât answer my prayers. It wasnât a dream.
I squint as a light temporarily blinds me. Bridget and Boh are kneeling beside me, their eyebrows drawn together, and eyes skating over my face as if theyâre looking for any injuries. Tears are freely falling from Bridgetâs eyes.
âPlease tell me that was a dream?â I say to no one in particular.
Dr. Lane lowers his head to the floor.
âI think you will be okay. I know itâs hard but try not to stress too much,â he instructs. He helps me up off the floor, and I take a seat in the chair next to Jace.
I glance over at Jace, tears falling from my eyes. How can I live without him? There is no life without him in it. If Jace doesnât walk this planet, I donât know how Iâm meant to walk it. I need him to come back to me. He will come back, there is no way he would leave me here alone. The doctor says something to Boh and walks out while Bridget follows him. Cash is nowhere to be seen, and Boh is sitting beside the hospital bed, holding Jaceâs hand with his head cast down.
âBoh,â I whisper. Boh looks up at me with bloodshot eyes.
âHe will come back to us.â I smile.
He forces a smile back at me. I know itâs hard to think positively, but I canât think any other way.
âIâm going to get some coffee. Bridge will be back soon. Do you want anything?â Boh stands up, letting go of Jaceâs hand.
âA coffee would be great.â
âCash said you havenât eaten anything. I will grab you a sandwich, you need to eat and be strong for when he wakes up,â he says, looking at Jace with a hint of a hope in his eyes.
âI know. A sandwich would be great, thanks, Boh.â Boh nods, heading toward the door.
âWhere has Cash gone?â I question before he slips out of the door.
âHe just headed out for some fresh air, he will be back soon,â he replies before walking out.
Fresh air sounds like a good idea, but I donât want to leave Jace on his own. Iâll wait until heâs back, then go get some myself. I slip my hand in Jaceâs and bring it up to my mouth, holding my lips to the back of his hand, the warmth of his skin on my lips calms my racing heart. Ten minutes later, Boh walks back in with a tray of coffees and sandwiches. I grab the coffee straight away, needing to feel a hit of energy.
âAre you okay to stay with Jace, I want to get some fresh air too.â
Boh nods. âOf course, Ry. Go get some air, but please eat when you come back.â He looks at me with pleading eyes and then picks up another coffee, holding it out to me.
