Chapter eleven

When they went outside to get to Krista’s, Dern looked around carefully. It wasn’t dark out yet but it was just edging into the beginning of twilight.

“Why are we going outside to do this? We left directly from my place.” The question held a hint of suspicion.

The tone wasn’t accusatory but it was clear that he knew that something was going on that he didn’t get. That was correct. Normally she wouldn’t have really explained it, since hiding what you knew was half of manipulating people properly.

A thing that she wasn’t planning to do with this particular Human. As for Holmstrum standing there behind them, well, she didn’t really care that much what he knew or didn’t. The man wasn’t a threat to her. Not directly.

She did the magical work first, folding space carefully, to allow them to bypass most of space. Then she waved in the correct direction.

“If we do this kind of thing in one area too often it can warp space. It isn’t that big of a deal most of the time but it can make you feel seasick if you have to walk through that kind of thing too often. If you learn to walk the lines or the void yourself, you’ll want to do it outside of your living quarters. Or if I come to visit there a lot. I honestly just figured that it wasn’t going to come up all the time.” She glanced at the tall man since he was going to have to go through first.

The trick was in getting back through the hole before someone could come along and murder Don for them. It didn’t take her long to step back through. Far less than her normal style of line walking would have taken for her to manage. The trip to L.A. from her house used to take her about ten minutes of walking. This way it was virtually instant. Minus the set-up time on the front end. Part of that was her attempt to use as little energy as possible while doing it. She still wasn’t up to the standards Zack set for it.

Really, now that she didn’t have to pretend to be the untouchable and perfect demon girl all the time, she could finally admit that she had a whole lot left to learn. It had always been true but being seen to do that kind of thing, working hard and asking for help in getting better, had been pretty close to admitting she deserved to die.

Now, if that pressure was really going to ease up a bit, she needed to take the chance to improve in a lot of ways. The first thing needed there would be admitting there were areas that she wasn’t as good at as she could have been. Fighting came to mind for that.

When she’d been younger her strength hadn’t really come in very quickly. Most Greater Demons could bench press decently mid-sized cars about a year before they ever heard the words Greater Demon.
