21 Often, a person starts a relationship, or remains in one, because he wants occasional companionship—not because he is looking toward a lifelong communion. Many people don’t want be lonely but also don’t want to lose their freedoms by entering into a serious commitment. But of course, a right understanding of courtship and marriage sees that freedom is not sacrificed, but rather enhanced by entering into a more profound communion with others. The young man who gives up his ability to go out whenever he pleases when he gets married also gains the ability to beget and raise children by that same act. So he exchanges a lesser freedom for a greater freedom. Freedom is the ability to act in a way that perfects one’s nature, and raising a family perfects human nature more than being able to go where one pleases when one pleases.
