Driving through off-campus housing was like taking a trip down memory lane. Though there were some memories I’d rather forget.

There were a lot of good memories in these houses. I drove past the one I’d lived in for my last two years of college, and grinned when I saw a bunch of girls sitting out front in lawn chairs continuing the tradition I’d enjoyed with my roommates.

I wasn’t sure who’d even started that. Just that there were always girls there on a weekend evening in lawn chairs drinking and having a good time.

Yeah, there were a lot of memories out here. Studying. Going out and partying when I got tired of studying.

There were a lot of memories of parties where I’d had my heart broken. Relationships that’d never quite worked because I’d always been a little too into the party lifestyle, and the rest of my time had been spent studying because how else was I going to get into med school?

I think part of the problem was also that I was always looking forward to med school rather than focusing on what was right in front of me.

And maybe part of the problem was also that I was always looking back. Looking to someone I couldn’t have. Or someone I thought I couldn’t have.

And here I was looking at that someone. Or rather I was looking at her house. I wasn’t even sure what I was doing here.

I hesitated as I pulled up. Gravel crunched under my tires, because the city didn’t take very good care of the roads in student neighborhoods for some reason. Probably because most of the students around here were seen as a net tax burden, for all that the college was one of the only things keeping this burned out Rust Belt town alive.

I stared at the house. My thoughts were wandering like they always did when I was about to do something I knew I shouldn’t.

“You’re being a fucking idiot Stephanie,” I said, looking at myself in the mirror.

I didn’t even know why I was here. It was a Friday night, and that had something to do with it. If it was a weekday then I’d be back in the city getting ready for my rotation.

Only I didn’t have my rotation anymore. That was all done with, and I had a weird stretch of time where I had nothing to do. No set schedule. Nothing that was coming up next.

Just a job search, and boy those offers had already been pouring in fast and furious. I could write my own ticket, but right now I was taking a ticket straight to Amelia’s house.

I almost put the car into drive and pulled away. The only problem was I caught movement on the porch I hadn’t noticed before because it was so dark. The only light came from some windows along the front of the house spilling out. Now that I looked I could definitely see someone sitting there.

I frowned. Amelia hadn’t mentioned anything about another woman.
