Chapter 22

I wasn’t sure what time it was when we finally fell asleep, and although we hadn’t known to pack any sleepwear or anything at all, it didn’t seem to matter. And when we woke up the next morning, I was still secured in Terrin’s arms.

We had really needed last night, and though Ray had no idea the depth behind his actions, our marriage was better for it. Because these kinds of investigations had a way of making everything else take the backburner.

We decided on room service for breakfast so we didn’t have to face everyone downstairs with our second day clothes. But while Terrin got that all handled, I hopped in the shower. But after I’d washed my hair and was finishing up, I thought about how big this shower really was, and I kind of wanted to try it out with Terrin.

“You know, there’s still plenty of hot water, and we still have a few hours until checkout!” I called to him. “Want to join me?” I then asked and waited for him to come into the bathroom, possibly running. But he didn’t, and I figured maybe he’d stepped out of the room to go check on breakfast.

I turned off the water, hopped out, and threw on a robe to see what he was doing. “Terrin?” I called as I stepped out of the bathroom, but as if I was having a horrifying déjà vu, I came face-to-face with two people. Terrin fought a smile and looked down, trying to stay composed despite the fact I obviously had the worst timing ever. Except, instead of Ronnie being the one to witness the most embarrassing moment ever, it was my father-in-law.

I immediately flushed red as Ray’s lips spread into a grin, and he playfully punched his son in his upper arm.

“Atta boy,” he congratulated his son. “I won’t hold you two up. I wouldn’t have even interrupted, I swear, but you know how Ronald is.” He looked back to me and then to Terrin. “Dang. You’re lucky I’m not twenty years younger.”

“Alright, goodbye,” Terrin spoke as he shoved his father into the hall.

“You two owe me!” he called into the room as Terrin slammed the door in his face and then turned to face me.

“Why does this happen to me?” I asked in mortification when we were alone again.

Terrin shrugged as he came over to me, and I saw as he started to smile. “It’s kind of funny.”

I shook my head. “It’s really not.”

“Okay, well, aside from my dad being a creep. I apologize for him,” he said as he came over and wrapped his arms around me, and I took the opportunity to bury my face in his chest.

“What was he doing here anyway?” I wondered as I dared to look up.

“Oh, Ronald was trying to get ahold of us, but you know, someone hasn’t given me a moment to check my phone,” he teased me. “Not that it would matter anyway because both of our phones are dead, and my dad didn’t want to tell Ronald where we were.
