We’re Just Friends

It’s good to be back in my townhouse. California holds beautiful memories, but this is home now, active and alive at every moment, and there’s no place like it.

I didn’t realize how much I’d missed Julia until I saw her. The house was immaculate as always, and now citrus-scented. It was very pleasant to come home to. She’d also bought a welcome home cake and lilies, my favorite flowers.

I only have two days to get re-acclimated and organized for summer school. Nicholas and I decided to take a break from each other and get our bearings back before school starts. I do my chores and errands missing him by my side, and wondering when I can see his smile again. There’s a little warmth in me when I think of him, and I go to sleep wishing he was there to wake up to. It’s silly and dumb, very basic emotions because I’m lonely without Kye, but I know this distance from Nicholas is the best way to get things straight again in my own head. Surely I can make it two days without contacting him.

I’ve unpacked, done laundry, gone to the bookstore for supplies, grocery shopped for the week, gassed up my car, and made dinner. It took me all of five hours. I still have thirty nine more to go. I’m bored to tears and as usual Julia has left for the weekend, leaving our home feeling deserted after so many days staying with relatives in packed houses.

All I can think about is calling Nicholas to see what he’s doing. I’m sure he’s still getting organized. After all, he’s always so much more prepared than everyone else in the world. Surely that takes some time?

I hold on to my resolve and instead, call London. Maybe she needs help getting ready for school? She doesn’t answer so I leave a message. A few minutes later, my phone chimes with a text. Sorry, with Eli ;-). Hope you had a great trip. We’ll talk later.

Great. I text her back. NP. SMH.

I head to the game room and turn on Netflix, defeated. I think it’s time for a Love/Hate marathon. Two episodes in, I notice it’s dark outside. Getting up to stretch, I decide maybe I’ll just dial Nicholas and pretend I accidentally butt-dialed him. I skip downstairs with my phone in hand because I want to be outside for my act, pretending I’m out and about when I accidentally dial him so I don’t look so desperate. But when I open the door, he’s standing on my porch, hand lifted to knock.

I smile the biggest smile that’s ever been smiled and enclose my arms around him as he drapes himself around me.

We don’t say anything, just stand like that for a while.

“I was just about to call you,” I greet.

He looks at me doubtfully. “From outside?”

I stumble, “Um, well, yeah, I wanted to get some fresh air, but I’ve had enough. Bring your bike in, and we can go inside.
