Chapter Eighteen
They pulled into Pack lands just after dark, and instead of pulling up to the main house, Kane drove past it down a road to a smaller log cabin style house nestled among some trees. He parked in a garage and shut off the engine, his hands clutching the steering wheel, belying his tension. They sat quietly for a long moment until he broke the silence.
âI know youâre worried about staying here and about the mating. I wonât press you about either, but my wolf might not allow me to let you go.â
His tone was filled with his regret, but his look showed his determination. He saw her as his mate, and that wasnât going to change, even as he was determined to provide her the time she needed to decide for herself. He was trying, which wasnât easy for a dominant shifter male. Besides, the more time she spent with him, the less she wanted to leave his side, which shouldâve made her want to run as fast as she could. But somehow, she wanted to stay, wanted to spend more time with him.
The low buzz of arousal that had been between them in the couple of days since theyâd met had been building, and she suspected it would intensify the longer she spent in his company. Their kiss had exploded the passion between them and made her want to explore the bond she could feel getting stronger. The physical connection was definitely there, and her body urged her to go all in, but she needed more. He seemed prepared to provide it. The more he respected her and treated her as an equal, the more the woman in her wanted to see if the bond she could sense developing between them was true. Perhaps, they could be partners in a true sense.
A part of her screamed at her to run, to not trust. Sheâd been betrayed too many times to trust anyone again. But another part of her said to trust her feelings, to trust what sheâd already seen. Kane was the real deal, though it had only been a couple of days. Despite him being a shifter, he still wanted her in his life. She thought back to what the healer had said, or rather what her mother had said through the healer. Maybe it was time to take a chance.
She reached across and laid her hand on his. âIâm not going anywhere, Kane. Not now.â
He froze. âI think thatâs the first time youâve used my name.â
She thought back, guilt making her flush. âMaybe I have been a little hard on you. Iâm sorry.â
âIâm worried about my sister and my Pack. I could use your help.â
She got out of the jeep and walked around to the driverâs side. She opened his door and held out her hand. âWeâve got this. Iâm here for you. Ready?â
He took her hand and got out of the jeep. âAs Iâll ever be.â
They went inside and Kane flipped on the lights. Sheridan was immediately enchanted by the interior.
