Peach

Episode 10

We drove away in silence. I think we were all stunned by how aggressive Luna had become during the argument. Although the girls didn’t see the argument happening, there was no missing the shouts and sounds of things breaking against the walls. As big as the mansion was, the sound carried throughout, and I found the girls downstairs. Peach had her arms around Olive and Olive held her protectively. Both were staring up toward the office. By the time we were leaving the sound of doors slamming upstairs followed by silence marked the end of the argument. We didn’t stay to find out who won.

I dropped Peach off at school a little late. She waved to me, and I noticed as she turned away that her pink book bag looked a little heavier than usual, but she was in the building before I could roll down the window to ask about it.

“Hey, Olive, does Peach have some kind of project or something at school?” I asked as an uncomfortable feeling made me want to go back.

“I don’t know, Peach is Peach. She's a goody-good so I’m sure she does.” Olive rolled her eyes.

This made me feel a little better because she was right, Peach was good. She almost never broke the rules, and when she did it was so minor, like an extra pancake, or reading by flashlight after bedtime. I tried my best to push the feeling away.

“So,” Olive began twisting a finger through her hair and looking at me through the rearview mirror. “I know we've had a lot going on, but tonight was the night that Dad wanted to meet with you. Since I wanted to go to that party and knowing that you can't take me with you, I think you know the party would be a good alternative.”

“Olive,” I said, tired of this discussion already.

“Listen to me,” she said quickly. “I could just go for a little while, while you're meeting with him and then you all could pick me up afterward.”

“No, Olive,” I said, adding emphasis on her name.

“Why not? It’s the perfect time for me to go to this party.”

“I said no.”

“You're going to ruin my social life. I'm the granddaughter of the Alpha. I need to make a social appearance and be available to the people that I’ll rule someday.”

I laughed so hard that tears came to my eyes. “Where do you get the idea that you are going to rule like some kind of queen?”

“Grandma Luna told me because I'm the eldest, I would rule the Alphas one day,” she said.

This made me stop laughing, and I met her eyes in the mirror. She was serious; Luna had had this conversation with her.

“Even if you were to become the leader of the Alphas one day, now is not the time for you to make social appearances. It’s too dangerous, and you are only fifteen. There’s plenty of time for you to get to know this world.” That uncomfortable feeling came back and settled in my gut like a stone.
