Chapter 11
Jenny was informed of her demotion over email, which was probably for the best because it pissed her off. The message was unnecessarily formal, and the moment she received it, she could pretty much feel everyone in the room watching her. It was unpleasant. The secretary coalition at the CIA felt like a group of high school girls or sharks, ready to attack at the slightest draw of blood.
It was absurd, honestly, the fact that people ever dreamed of being secretaries for the CIA. It was a thankless job, one that contained no useful or compelling elements. Jenny was perhaps not the best hand of judgment for this kind of work, as she had never been satisfied with anything that kept her stagnant and working consistently in one location. It felt thankless and inhuman, something that people couldnât ever be made to adapt to or become accustomed to.
It was no matter, though. Jenny really was not that attached to her work as a secretary at all. She had pretty much been a rotating typist for the past week or so, so losing her desk was not that big of a deal to her. It was a stupid place to work anyway. Sheâd done what she could, done what was necessary. She followed a woman all dressed in purple down to the floor below, a room with significantly less windows and more desks.
âRecords,â the woman said, as if she had been able to hear the questions Jenny was about to ask about her new situation. âYou will mostly be retyping internal communications by hand.â
âOh..."
âFrom thirty years ago. Thatâs as far as they have reached since we began this division. They usually make it through about a year of records every six months human time. Dog years.â
Oh. So she was going to do mindless work on records that would in no way benefit her team, an entire floor below any of the important people involved in the mission. Excellent.
âAnd thatâs Dom. Sheâll be your desk partner. Should you have questions, sheâll be able to help,â the woman continued. âShe was in much the same position as you this time last year.â
Another failed secretary as her mentor. Even better.
âDo let me know if you need anything. Iâm always available over email.â
âAnd I know where your desk is,â Jenny tried to say with a small smile.
âYes, well.â The woman bit her lip. âYou may be losing swipe access to the upper-division floor. Iâll speak to security to see if we can still get you partial access to the rooms of HR team members. Iâll let you know on that one.â
With that, the woman in purple left for the upstairs once again, the place where all the elites played their charades of actual government work. Jenny turned to her new desk and took a seat.
âHey, Jennifer, Iâm Dom. They said youâd be joining me.â
The woman who held out her hand was beautiful, far too beautiful to be working in records. She had big lips
