Chapter 12

“What do you think?” Rosie asked after a few minutes.

“I think the first thing we need to find out is whether Calvin was on Maui that night,” I said. “If he flew back to Oahu—and stayed there—that night, then we can rule him out as a suspect. But if he stayed on the island, he’s my main guy.”

“I have a friend who works for Hawaiian Airlines,” Dot said. “I can ask her to check the passenger logs. She’ll tell me when he went back to Oahu.”

“I think we need to look into the councilmembers,” Rosie said.

“Janice Evers is retiring, and she voted in favor of the project,” I chimed in. “So did Natalie Lee. If anyone took a bribe, I bet it was her. I know that much.”

Dot nodded. “Yes. But there are five councilmembers in Maui County. Albert Millner also voted for the project.”

“Is he retiring?” I asked.

“Not as far as I know. The next election isn’t for eighteen months, though.”

“I wonder if James bribed all of them,” I mused.

“It’s possible,” Dot said. “Maybe he reneged on the deal afterward. I think it’s also something we need to look into. Those are our two best approaches.”

“Agreed,” Rosie said. “Are you working tomorrow?”

I nodded. “Yeah, but I’m usually done around three.”

“Good. We’ll reconvene afterward.”

The three of us got up and left, with Rosie and Dot dropping me off at Mom’s car before I headed home. I was just walking through the door when I got a text from Zoe.

Well, it was nice to show up to work and see that you haven’t been Tased and arrested again.

As I sent her back a whole bunch of the tongue-sticking-out emojis, Mom called out to me. “Are you going out again tonight? Maybe you’re going to see that man again?”

“Nope,” I replied. “I’m having a night in.”

“Well, I suppose that’s good. You don’t want him to think you’re too easy. Giving it up two nights in a row just makes you seem desperate.”

“Weren’t you going to go grocery shopping?” I asked, my voice involuntarily rising an octave. “I need some Oreos, if you don’t mind buying a pack.”

I didn’t need Oreos. What I did need was for my mom to start talking about literally anything other than my nonexistent sex life.

“I can do that. Normal Oreos?”

“Can you get the birthday cake ones if they have them?” I asked with a grin. Birthday cake Oreos were my secret guilty pleasure.

“Sure. Anything else? I was thinking of making quesadillas for dinner.”

Grateful that the conversation had moved on, I shook my head. “Nothing specific, thanks. Maybe just a few snacks to graze on. I already ate, so I’m not super hungry.”

“Will do. I’ll be back in an hour.”

“Thanks, Mom.”

Once Mom left, I decided to take Coco out for a walk down to the beach. As soon as we left the house, she began straining against her harness in the right direction, and I laughed. It hadn’t taken long for my little dog to figure out exactly where the beach was.
