Chapter Eleven
Sleep didnât come easy on the sofa, and as soon as Mossyâs feet hit the floor, I snatched the blanket away and met her in the kitchen.
âTea, my dear?â she asked.
I stood close enough to invade her personal space. âYes, please. But we need to talk.â
She placed a hand over her mouth and let out a wide yawn. âWhat about?â
âJohn Bleaker.â
Mossy set two teacups on the counter and, after a moment of contemplation, turned to me. âWhat happened to John is a tragedy. Iâm sad heâs gone, and Iâm sad to have lost a one-time friend. But thereâs nothing you can do that the police arenât already doing.â
âI need to help them.â
âNo, you donât.â Her tone took on a sternness that rivaled my dadâs. âThatâs not how things work in the human world. Bad things happen and there is no one to wave a wand or sprinkle fairy dust to fix it.â
I backed up a step. Iâd thought Mossy to be my ally.
She turned her attention back to fixing the tea. She filled each cup with water from the tap and placed them in the microwave to warm them for a minute.
After placing a tea bag in my cup, she set it in front of me. Then she smiled as if everything were settled.
âI have a meeting with the mayor this morning to go over the final flower arrangements for the festival Friday night. Iâm so glad youâll still be here for the festival. Itâs the highlight of the year for Lilac Cove.â
The mayor. Johnâs place of employment, and the next stop on my list. Sorry, Mossy, but I wonât let this go. Not until I fix it.
âCan I go with you to your meeting?â I asked.
She lifted one shoulder in a half-shrug. âI donât see why not. We have about an hour to get ready.â
Pip rustled around in his cage and emitted a series of chitters. Mossy disappeared behind the screen, and I took the opportunity to have a quick conversation with my partner.
I opened the cage and he hopped on the front of my pajamas.
âPip, can you understand me?â
He gave a little nod.
âTry saying something to me to see if I can understand you.â
âIâm hungry,â he squeaked out.
I rubbed a finger over his head. âPerfect.â
He crawled to my shoulder. âWe can communicate again? I thought that other fairy was a part of a dream.â
âWe can, but weâll have to be sly about it. No one else can understand you, but Iâll have to be careful not to draw too much attention to myself when weâre together.â
âIâm still hungry,â he said.
I took that as an acknowledgement and searched through Mossyâs refrigerator for something he could nibble on. With the way Mossy used the microwave to heat water and the fact that her fridge stood empty, I guessed she didnât enjoy cooking. I found a box of microwave waffles in the freezer. Better than nothing. At least she had a toaster.
A minute later, I broke apart the crispy toasted waffle for Pip.
