There’s only one way out of the dungeon which sort of fucking blows, because that means we head out the wood door, up the stairs, and straight into trouble.

Castle Diamond is overrun with Clubs, card soldiers and humans alike, and they’re not alone. There are … things with them, horrible, horrible things that look like bloodied, broken dolls. As soon as Edith sees them, she passes out and only narrowly avoids cracking her skull on the stone floor because Dee catches her and hoists her into his arms.

The King of Diamonds, the White Knight, Dor, and the rest of the people we saw in the corridor are nowhere to be seen. If they’re smart, I’m sure they’ll run. I know we’re planning to. We can’t fight the big-bads and their army by ourselves. No, we have to fight fire with fire. Besides, we have my family, and we have the Looking-Glass, and we can’t risk a full-on brawl right now.

“How did they get an army here so fucking quickly?” Brennin snaps, curling one gloved hand over the railing and looking down at a room full of torture devices … and soldiers. But holy hell, torture devices?! The King of Diamonds, that Humpty Dumpty idiot, has a dungeon with a rack in it? If I find out my father was subjected to torture, Hearts help the man and his court.

“Clearly, they’ve got an ace up their sleeve,” the Duke says, tail thrashing.

“Or a rat,” March mutters, as I study North’s tall form. I imagine he could shift and throw down, but the goal here is to get out before the Walrus and the Carpenter find us. North moves away from the railing and over to a small window. It’s just large enough for him to stick an arm through, probably a murder hole or something. Hell, maybe it’s medieval ventilation for all the horrific smells emanating from this nightmare of a room?

The Duke looks at the window for a moment, and then he simply smashes his fist into the stone, shattering the wall into pieces. The opening is now just large enough for a person to squeeze through. The Cheshire Cat, who’s holding a disturbingly calm Dinah in his arms, leans over to peer out.

“Out through here,” North says, bowing and gesturing with one arm in the direction of the cool breeze. Outside, I can see darkness, trees, and giant mushrooms—that’s fucking it. It reminds me of my first night in Underland, when I came out of that door and found myself at The Pool, with nothing but woods all around us.

“Pardon me, ma’am,” Lar says, sweeping my mother up into his arms. She lets out a little shriek, but doesn’t fight him as he leaps from the window, spreads his wings, and carefully ends up on the lawn one story down.

Dee steps forward to follow suit, when one of the rotten-doll monsters stumbles up the stone steps and lets out a hiss. It’s followed by another, and another, and another. And then a swarm, like a cloud of bleeding, rotten insects.
