DEGREES OF ADDICTION

So why do some people fall deeper into the trap than others? Why can one person have the occasional drink, while another ends up reaching for the booze first thing in the morning? Doesn’t that suggest that one has an addictive personality and the other doesn’t?

It does point to a difference between them, yes, but there are numerous differences between people that can explain why one person’s behavior differs from another’s in this context, and none of them has anything to do with an addictive personality.

For most people the first experience of drinking is revolting. For some, that’s enough to put them off ever drinking again. Others see it as a challenge that must be surmounted if they’re to earn respect, and make a point of drinking as much as they can. Others can’t afford to drink more than a small amount each week. In addition to that, our behavior is closely linked to the influences we’re subjected to as we grow up: different parents, teachers, friends, things we read, watch and listen to, places we go, people we meet, etc.

All these factors will have a bearing on how quickly we descend into the trap. The celebrities that we hear about who seem to fall so rapidly into the trap usually have millions to pour down the drain and the time and opportunity to do so.
