CAPT. ROBERT B. HAMPTON (1814–1863; SECTION 14, LOT 91). Captain Hampton’s devotion to public service was borne of the lawlessness during the California Gold Rush, when he was both a prospector and an officer of the First California Guard. In the Civil War, he organized Hampton’s Battery F, which became widely noted for its service in significant engagements, including Bull Run and Antietam in 1862. Hampton fell in the Battle of Chancellorsville on the morning of Sunday, May 3. His men went on to fight in Gettysburg, where 14 of them would fall repulsing Pickett’s Charge, in the Peach Orchard, and on Cemetery Ridge. There are two monuments dedicated to Hampton’s Battery near the Pennsylvania Memorial. Survivors held reunions both at Gettysburg and Allegheny Cemetery, where they remembered their beloved captain and regaled each other with songs and stories of their service under him.
