Alex and I walked with the Griffins, Dotsie, and Myrtle to the parking lot.

“Think about the canasta,” Madeline said as we parted.

“I will,” I said.

Alex gave me a quizzical look; I responded with a “never mind” glance.

We said goodbye to the women and headed for my car.

“Do you want to know what I found out from Connie?” Alex asked.

I located my keys and pushed the remote to unlock the car. “Of course I do. But now I feel bad, because we had an ulterior motive for coming to the party. Connie and her family are very nice people.”

“They are.”

After we got in the car and I started the engine, I asked, “So what happened?”

“Connie is a delightful young woman,” Alex began as I pulled from the parking spot and we were on our way. “She invited us to the restaurant where she works for a meal on the house.”

“Great. So where was she Tuesday morning?”

“Let me tell you everything she said.” When I sighed, Alex said, “You feel bad, so listening to the whole story will be your penance.”

“All right.”

“First let me tell you this. She assumed that we’re together.” He rubbed his hands together. “Isn’t that great?”

“What?”

“She said it was wonderful that you and I were a couple. That she understood, with all the hours we spent together and all our love scenes.”

“What did you say?”

“I neither confirmed nor denied her assumption.”

“All right. Go on.” I was accustomed to fans asking whether I was involved with my leading man, or outright assuming I was.

“So anyway, I asked what she did for a living and she told me all about being a chef and a caterer.”

“We know all that.”

“I’m just telling you what she told me. I asked what her goals were, and she told me all about wanting to open her own catering business, full time. She said she had a good list of clients, all she needed was a facility to meet her expanding needs.”

“Did she mention Anna?”

“Yes. She told me that your neighbor had promised to rent her a space where she’d have a full commercial kitchen. She said it was perfect for her needs and she was close to securing it when Anna changed her mind. Connie said she wanted to rip Anna’s lungs out when she told her.”

I gasped. “Really? Rip her lungs out?”

“Yep. Connie said she saw red. She was so furious.”

“Does she have an alibi?”

“Connie said she was filled with guilt when she heard about Anna. She actually thinks she wished death on her. Poor girl.”

“Her alibi?” I asked, impatient.

“She readily, and unwittingly, offered it, because she thought it was so ironic. She was in the kitchen at the restaurant, making two hundred meatballs for a party. Anna had recommended Connie to the client. Connie actually said she was in the kitchen pounding and slapping the meat, pretending it to be Anna’s face. It was a real catharsis. And then she felt guilty when she got the phone call that Anna was dead.” Alex snapped his finger and slapped his forehead.
