Seeing the entrance of my grandparents’ house was a relief, and not only because I was desperate for answers. No, I was relieved because I needed to get away from the dark cloud that surrounded Archer and was spreading to all of us.

Getting some answers would be nice, too. Especially with the threat of talking to Hermes looming over me.

“Let’s do a perimeter search around the house. Stay far enough away that they won’t see us from the windows. Søren and Nafula, you start on the right, we’ll go on the left.”

With that, Archer left, walking with determination toward the trees that surrounded the left side of the house. Nafula gave me a look that said ‘Good luck with him’ before half-dragging Søren in the other direction. Which left me there, forced to speed-walk to catch up to a brooding Archer.

Wish me luck.

By the time I finally reached Archer, I was slightly out of breath. I needed to get back into working out.

“So. How long can I expect this cold shoulder to last? A day? A week? More? Just asking for a friend.”

“We’re supposed to be walking a perimeter and checking for any traps. That requires silence, Mayfield.”

“Oh, come on! As if you can’t multitask or use your powers to check this whole perimeter in a few seconds. Let’s stop playing games, here.”

The man scoffed. “Let’s stop playing games? Are you being serious right now?” He stopped and turned to face me. “That’s all you’ve been doing, lately. I feel like I don’t even know you anymore.”

I rolled my eyes, annoyed by the hypocrisy of it all. “Are you serious, Archer? You lied to me for months about being a Copper. I never held that against you because I understood that it was a matter a safety for you to keep that quiet. This is exactly what this was about – my safety. I apologized a dozen times already and explained extensively why I didn’t say anything earlier. So, quit sulking like a baby and grow the hell up.”

Silence met my words, but for once, I didn’t want to try and fill it up. If Archer didn’t want to understand that my choice to keep my powers secret was a matter that had nothing to do with him, then it was his loss. I loved him, but I refused to be treated like I’d just killed his puppy under his eyes.

It was ridiculous.

Meeting my grandparents and learning about my powers were important to me and I had the right to decide when I wanted to share that news with my other loved ones. Not to mention that the argument still sat heavily between us and hadn’t made it easy for me to share in the first place.

“Is that the end of the secrets?” Archer finally asked with a sigh.

For half of a second, I felt myself become defensive. What was that supposed to mean? That he thought I had a closet full of skeletons, still? But then, before I could let my anger burn up again, I met Archer’s eyes and they looked so tired.
