CHAPTER 18

Michelle has two bags on each shoulder and one in her left hand. Ronan gets up and rushes over to offer his assistance. I follow him, feeling a tinge of jealousy, and I hear her thank him for his help.

“You’re welcome,” he says. “My name is Ronan Reed. I’m a private detective.” He points with his thumb back at me. “This is Sadie. She is working with me.”

“Nice to meet you both,” Michelle says.

Ronan shakes her hand, but I don’t return the favor when she makes a half ditch effort to shake mine.

“I was wondering if you have a minute to speak with us,” Ronan courteously says.

“Okay, I guess.” Michelle is apprehensive. “I need to put away these bags first.”

Ronan takes two more, and we all walk together to her car. The trunk pops open before we get to it, and Michelle takes a bag at a time from Ronan and begins carefully loading each one as if they were delicate artifacts.

“Alright, what is it?” she says after she finishes.

“Your dad, Israel Foxx,” Ronan says. “We need to find him.”

“He’s probably in L.A.”

“In the last standing skyscraper,” I remark.

“Yes, and if he isn’t there, I have no idea where he is. He has houses all around the world.”

“Do you know Clyde Grey?” I ask. I’m not sure if my questions will lead to anything, but it’s my attempt to pick her brain to find out what she knows.

“He’s a corporate and financial giant like my dad.”

I ask, “Do you think he is trying to destroy Grey?”

“Why are you asking?” Michelle says curiously.

“We want to know because a kid back in Americana, Oregon, is being falsely accused of murder,” Ronan answers.

I’m surprised he said that: falsely accused. Does he believe in Rylan now?

He continues, “We think that your father might have something to do with it.”

“I wouldn’t put it past him,” Michelle says. “My dad absolutely hates Grey.”

“We want to speak to him,” I tell her. “But his lawyer is preventing that.”

“You want me to reach out to him?” she says.

“No, we want you to bring him to us,” Ronan remarks. “We won’t hurt him. We only want to talk to him.”

“You hurt him?” she huffs. “Even if you wanted to, you’d have a hell of a time trying.”

Michelle’s forewarning comes across loud and clear to me, but for Ronan, he takes it with a gleaming smile. I think he likes a challenge.

“Will you help us, Michelle?” he asks.

“Sure. Why not.”
