Beth was skeptical but that all changed when Robbie shared his plan. Now she was worried. Robbie’s hatred for the gang ran far deeper than his brother stealing his girl out from under his nose. “You want to do what?” she asked.

“If you think we’re going to waltz in there and scoop her out without a distraction, you are mistaken. I know what my brother values. We hit him where it hurts. He’ll respond. He already knows I’m here. And with you two on the loose he will have no choice but to handle this himself.”

“But it’s your brother.”

“He stopped being that a long time ago.”

They’d gone back and forth on what was the best approach to get Shelby but with only Robbie knowing how his brother would coordinate the bikers, they had to trust him. Still, that didn’t stop Beth from trying to talk Landon out of it.

While Robbie prepared for their departure to the first stop, she pulled Landon aside. “I don’t like this.”

“He gave you the chance to provide an alternative. It makes sense what he wants to do. It’s risky but so is trying to navigate it out of the town. We won’t make it two streets before they come after us. So I say we follow his lead. See if there is any weight to his idea and give it a shot.”

She exhaled hard, exasperated, glancing at Robbie.

Who was this man? How did he wind up being a part of this biker group? Everyone had a story and she was sure she’d learn his in time if they survived the night.

“All right. You ready?” Robbie asked.

They nodded.

“Beth. Your dog. You might be better off leaving him here until we get back.”

“Grizzly comes with me.”

Robbie’s gaze bounced to Landon but he shrugged. “Don’t look at me. I’ve already been through this with her.” With that said Robbie looked out the window one final time before unlocking the door at the rear of the clinic and they rolled out.

The Exxon gas station was located two blocks away.

They moved in a line, keeping their backs to the wall. While Beth was confident that Grizzly would stay close, she couldn’t risk it and had leashed him to her waist using a leash from the clinic. She kept a firm grip as they charged forward down Main Street, using the buildings around them as cover. From one structure to the next they darted in and out of the shadows. Every now and again Robbie threw up a hand and they dropped and waited for a passing bike or truck to roll by.

Beside the gas station was a two-story real estate office that had been broken into, they ducked into there and climbed the steps to the exit that led out to the roof so they could get a better lay of the land. Beth didn’t think it was a good idea to have them all at street level as there were too many of Bosley’s men and Lilith’s sluts searching for them.
