Chapter Fifteen

Evie

I just couldn’t figure it out. What had changed in Landon in such a short time? When I arrived a week ago he was rude and miserable and looked for ways to make me uncomfortable. Now he was almost cheerful and even teasing at times.

He still liked making me uncomfortable but the rudeness and bad attitude had melted away into effort and productivity. There was plenty a lot of anger and frustration left in him but now he was channeling it into getting well instead of remaining an invalid. Del worked wonders with him in just two sessions. His no nonsense approach was just what Landon needed. I’m pretty sure Sara Jane had something to do with it as well. Landon appeared quite partial to the little girl—even if he continued to act like a jerk at physical therapy.

Whatever it was that had changed, it was making my job a whole lot easier. At least, the medical side of it anyway. His personality still left a lot to be desired but there’s only so much I could expect from someone like him. I got the distinct impression the moment we met that Landon was the typical spoiled, rich kid with an attitude to match so it was no surprise he was both cocky and miserable. The big surprise was the sudden change of heart that kept surfacing amid his sea of anger.

Now he sat in the front seat with Walter, humming along to a song on the radio. The mood was lighter overall than it was the last time we’d made this trip. Even Walter was in better spirits. The sun shone brightly from a blue sky and although the breeze had a more noticeable chill to it, the day was beautiful. Perfect for another stroll along the beach.

The rest of the drive passed quickly as I looked out the window, feeling more relaxed than I had in months.

“Well, here we are.” Walter parked the sedan, got out and retrieved Landon’s chair.

I followed him to the passenger side but Landon waved us both away, transferring himself to his chair and wheeling over to the ramp.

“Let me help you. Those muscles in your arms are probably shaking by now.” I stepped up behind him and started to push. Walter stayed outside, fiddling with something in the car as I accompanied Landon to the third floor.

“I can do it myself, you know.” And there he was again, back to being a jerk.

“Want me to stop?”

Instead of answering, he stayed quiet until we made it to the third floor. “I think I’m going to put my trunks on and go soak for a bit. You should join me,” Landon said as he turned the knob of his bedroom door.

“I really think maybe I’ll go for a jog on the sand first but thank you. I want to take advantage of the beautiful weather. Walter says we’re in for a cool down tomorrow that will last through Christmas. You soak and when I get back, we’ll stretch you out.
