Chapter 6
Shep scoffed. Savannah Grant? He couldnât stand the woman. Never had been able to. Even when theyâd been kids. Spoiled, entitled little rich girl. Their families traveled in the same social and business circles. Her family was old money. Real Estate.
When his parents had decimated his world and sent Missy away, theyâd deemed Savannah the âappropriateâ girl he would be with from then on. And theyâd outlined their plan for his future. His parents and Savannah had intended on riding on his back all the way to DC. And he had no say in the matter. Like hell.
Heâd played around the edges just enough to pacify his parents and lead Savannah to believe he was interested in her. Shep should have pursued an acting career like his cousin Mitchell. He supposed politics wasnât much different. He and Missy had been active in school government together before sheâd left Shepherd Grove. Theyâd even discussed their political aspirations outside of Shepherd Grove before his parents and Savannah had destroyed their dreams. He felt his temper rise in response to the unfairness of it all.
Missy knew heâd never been with Savannah. Not seriously. What game was she playing now? His patience was running thin with all of their small talk since her arrival.
âIâm sure Savannahâs too busy trying to wrangle in husband number four to worry about my supper plans. You know we were never together,â he said.
Shep was stunned when Missyâs mouth fell open, complete surprise etched on her beautiful face. Something wasnât right.
âFour? I heard someone call you mayor at Pearlâs. Are you down from Dallas or up from Houston for the baby shower?â Missy asked.
His mind raced, searching for answers for Missyâs odd behavior, but came up empty. âCome on now, Missy. You know Iâm the mayor of Shepherd Grove.â
She shook her head. âNo. I didnât know.â
Shep rubbed his hands together under the table. He was through. He had many questions of his own. âWhy didnât you come back home after Mama died? Or at least after the house was built? I waited for you.â
Missy shoved out of her chair, shaking. âShe died? When?â Seemingly confused, she paced around the room.
Shepâs mind spun with the implications of this new information. âFour years ago. Not too long after we earned our MBAs.â
A tear slid from the corner of her eye, and his heart sank. âAnd your father? Is he still alive?â
âNo, Missy. He died in his sleep from a massive heart attack a few weeks after we left for college. How could you not know? I donât understand.â He needed answers. Now.
Shep approached her cautiously, trying not to spook her, and gently took her delicate hands in his. Something as simple as holding hands. Heâd missed this with her over the years. When she looked up at him, her eyes glistening with tears, the sorrow and guilt he felt were nearly too much to bear.
âBecause the agreement your parents forced on me was to never contact you again. You had a bright future, and I would be in the way.
