Like Kropp, he is a strong character, a hero and a man who has a very objective vision of a society at war.

Franz Kemmerich

Franz Kemmerich, who grew up with Bäumer and who used to be a brilliant student adored by his family, is dying in a military hospital with two amputated legs. The description of his sufferings, his agony and his fear of death are almost a collective cry against war, the cry of a lost, sacrificed generation, led into a struggle that it did not ask for: “The whole world ought to pass by this bed and say: "That is Franz Kemmerich, nineteen and a half years old, he doesn't want to die. Let him not die!” (p. 15)
