BEFORE TOO LONG, CHRISTINA started speaking again. “Where are we going now?” she asked, turning to Matthew, just like last time. “Is it another surprise?”

“No, I’ll tell you,” answered Matthew, glancing at Christina out of the corner of one eye. “We’re going to my place.”

Christina’s brow furrowed. “We can’t go there.”

“How come?”

“Well...,” Christina began slowly, searching for the right verbiage. “Isn’t that not allowed?”

She elaborated, “I mean, is it acceptable for camp members to have visitors? And what about your roommate?”

For the first time in quite a while, a light-hearted grin appeared on Matthew’s face. Christina assumed that this was a good sign, but didn’t yet know for sure.

“I didn’t say we were going to the campus,” he corrected. “I said my place.”

Christina gave Matthew a frozen stare. “You mean like your house?”

“Well, technically, it’s my parents’ house. But yes.”

To be more accurate, it was a vacation home, owned by the Fitzgerald family and used regularly (most notably by that aunt who works at New Jersey University, who lives in the area and can keep up its maintenance). But nobody would be there right now.

Last Matthew heard (then again, their communication was not exactly frequent), his parents were on a cruise somewhere, not scheduled back for at least a few days. In the meantime, Aunt Millie had already been informed that he was going to be there for the evening and would take care of all necessary work.

In all honesty, there probably wouldn’t be any issue with bringing a young lady over to his dorm room. Provided the curfew was satisfied, and Matthew continued showing up to sessions, it truly didn’t matter one way or the other.

Actually, this particular strategy was possibly more problematic; because now, Matthew would be likely committing a curfew violation. In fact, that was pretty much a guarantee. Yet he wanted privacy above all else, and thus decided to go through with it anyway.

Some things were worth the potential risk, and Matthew felt confident that this would be one of them. He was counting on it.

Matthew pulled up in front of the house, and turned off his car. It was completely dark outside now, and there was no lighting along this property’s exterior, so Christina couldn’t get a real good look.

She had trouble determining if Matthew’s mother and father were actually home. A car wasn’t spotted in the driveway, nor any light on inside. The thought of Mr. and Mrs. Fitzgerald being present in that house right now definitely unnerved her.

But not nearly as much as if they weren’t.

Christina whipped around to face Matthew again. “What are we doing here?” she asked sternly.

“You’re going to make it up to me.”

“How?” the suddenly timid girl wondered cautiously.

There was no reply from Matthew, who raised both eyebrows, and formulated another smile, this one even more prominent than the last. It didn’t take long for Christina to fully decipher his message here. Yet how she felt about it remained uncertain.

“And what are you going to do in return?” Christina wanted to know.
